Our Methods

We are a friendly community based club dedicated to progressive martial arts training; developing diverse skills in the fighting arts with a strong focus on Traditional Shukokai Karate. Our progressive grading structure enables essential skills and techniques to be developed to create an all round martial artist with a strong traditional Shukokai karate base supplemented with mixed martial arts training through the addition of groundwork techniques and weapons training.

Traditional Karate

Our core training is in Traditional Shukokai Karate. A direct descendant of the Shito-Ryu style of karate it involves the study of body mechanics with the end result being the delivery of the greatest impact with the least amount of effort.

 

Karate training develops increased power, stamina, strength and physical fitness whilst also developing a positive mental attitude, discipline and respect for yourself and others.

 

Training is diverse involving Kata (forms), sparring, padwork, basics and self defence, applying the techniques learnt through Bunkai (the practical application of Karate).

Groundwork / Grappling

Many modern styles of karate have lost the groundwork and grappling techniques prevalent in traditional Okinawan forms.

We train in groundwork techniques to produce an all round martial artist with skills not only whilst standing but also able to defend themselves whilst on the ground.

Sensei Mike is a qualified Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and applies his grappling knowledge during groundwork training.

Martial Arts Blend
Kali / Eskrima /  Jeet Kune Do

Our weapon training focuses on Kali / Eskrima, a Filipino Martial Art, Bo / Jo staff, Nunchaku and knife defence (senior grades and adults)

 

Our Kali / eskrima training focuses on both the Inosanto / Lacoste blend, Doce Pares and De Campo 1-2-3 Original.

Sensei Mike is a qualified instructor (Magtutudlo) under Maestro Paolo Pagaling and Master Jomalin Cabellero in De Campo 1-2-3 Original

Sensei Mike has also gained Coach Level 1 in Combined Fighting Arts (CFA) under Mark Hayes comprising of Jun Fan Gung Fu / Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do concepts, Inosanto Lacoste / Doce Pares Kali and Grappling methods.

Fitness & Fun

Training in Martial Arts is a great way to develop physical fitness and improve your general health.

 

All of our classes involve a warm up session consisting of aerobic and anaerobic cardio  exercise,  strength and suppleness training, stretching and body conditioning.  

 

We understand that everyone's physical abilities are different and whilst we encourage our students to train hard they must also respect their bodies and work to their limits.

 

Martial Arts not only develops physical fitness but also develops mental health training in meditation and breathing techniques.
